Training for Good is an impact-focused training organization. They run fellowships that place talented professionals in impactful careers.

CURRENT OR PREDICTED IMPACT:

  • In 2023, they expect to transition:

    • 4-8 individuals into full-time roles working on AI governance in Europe (i.e., approx. 2 counterfactual transitions to career in AI governance in the EU)

    • 2-4 impact-focused journalists into full-time roles in major news outlets (i.e., approx. 1 counterfactual transition to a career in high-impact journalism)

  • Given that they are piloting these programs for the first time, their predictions are highly uncertain. They will have an external review of Training for Good conducted between July 2023 - December 2023 to help assess their impact.

COST-EFFECTIVENESS:

  • In year two, Training for Good expect their impact to be 1.6x their operating costs. Disclaimer: As a meta-org, M&E is particularly speculative and at this early stage, with long lag times in our metrics, they are exceptionally cautious about these figures, but a rough BOTEC can be found here.

SIGNIFICANT UPDATES ON PROGRESS:

  • Training for Good now focuses exclusively on programs that enable talented and altruistic early-career professionals to directly enter the first stage of high-impact careers.

  • Concretely, in 2023 they are running the following programs:

    • EU Tech Policy Fellowship - an 8-month fellowship for aspiring EU policy professionals interested in safeguarding future generations from threats posed by emerging technologies (especially artificial general intelligence).

    • Tarbell Fellowship - a 12-month program for early-career journalists interested in covering topics that could have a major impact on the lives of billions, such as global poverty, animal welfare, and existential risks.

ACHIEVEMENTS:

  • Designed and ran the EU Tech Policy Fellowship 2022

    • Created six 4-month placements for fellows at competitive policy think tanks such as The Future Society, Centre for European Policy Studies, and The German Marshall Fund.

    • As of Jan 2023, 3 fellows were offered and accepted full-time positions working on emerging tech policy at EU think tanks and other institutions. Given that most placements ended in December 2022, theyexpect many more fellows to receive offers in the coming months.

  • In year 1, designed & ran 6 programs in 9 months (Negotiating for Good, Impact Grantmaking, Coaching for EA Leaders, Impactful Policy Careers, Red Team Challenge, and Capacity Ventures). They have now discontinued these programs as they believe they are less promising than their current programs. You can read more about them here.

ROOM FOR MORE FUNDING IN 2023:
