FORTIFY HEALTH
STARTED: Started by CE in 2017
SEED GRANT: $30,000
MONEY FUNDRAISED (July 2024): ~$10 million
WEBSITE: https://www.fortifyhealth.global/
Fortify Health’s vision is a healthier world where everyone has the micronutrients they need to survive and thrive. Fortify Health prevents and reduces anaemia at scale in India by fortifying wheat flour with iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12.
COST-EFFECTIVENESS:
-
Fortify Health is estimated to have a cost-effectiveness of approximately 9-10x cash, as estimated by GiveWell’s most recent cost-effectiveness analysis.
-
GiveWell’s most recent published evaluation of Fortify Health. More broadly, food fortification is widely-recognised as a cost-effective, safe and sustainable way to address hidden hunger without requiring changes in consumer behaviour (see Hurrell 2010, Gera 2012, Fields et al 2021, World Health Authority 2023).
IMPACT / MILESTONES ACHIEVED:
-
3,2 M beneficiaries reached with more than 20,000 metric tonnes of wheat flour each month through direct support of millers selling their products in the open market.
-
Partnership agreements with 87 mill partners across 12 states in India.
-
Technical partner to the Andhra Pradesh State Civil Supplies Corporation Limited. Fortify Health is helping to support the distribution of high-quality fortified chakki atta (wheat flour) to approximately 5 million beneficiaries each month through this project
-
Feeding India Partnership: Currently, Feeding India provides ~100,000 meals to school children across India each day. Fortify Health is providing consumer awareness of fortification, and increasing the reach of fortified wheat flour to vulnerable populations.
HAPPIER LIVES INSTITUTE
Michael Plant, PhD
Founder and Director
STARTED: Incubated in the 2019 Incubation Program (started before the program).
MONEY FUNDRAISED TO DATE (Jan 2023): $1,2M
The Happier Lives Institute connects donors, researchers, and policymakers with the most cost-effective opportunities to increase global well-being. Using the latest subjective well-being data, they identify the problems that matter most to people and find evidence-based ways to solve them.
IMPACT / MILESTONES ACHIEVED:
-
HLI conducted a cost-effectiveness analysis of group psychotherapy in low-income countries, and compared the results to three interventions that are considered to be amongst the most cost-effective in the world: cash transfers, deworming pills, and anti-malaria bednets. They estimated that StrongMinds, a nonprofit that provides group interpersonal therapy for women in Uganda and Zambia, is more cost-effective than GiveWell’s top charities (unless you hold unusually strong views about the badness of death).
-
HLI discovered an error in GiveWell’s analysis of deworming, which reduces the cost-effectiveness estimate by 10%-30%. If they hadn’t made this error, GiveWell estimates they would have made $2-$8m less in grants to deworming (out of $55m total) since 2019.
-
HLI's meta-analysis on the effects of cash transfers on subjective well-being and mental health was published in Nature Human Behaviour.
-
HLI’s research has been awarded several prizes as part of GiveWell’s Change Our Mind Contest, Open Philanthropy’s Cause Exploration Prizes, and the EA Criticism & Red Teaming Contest.
